Mrs. Doris Hammons Mitchell, 76, of Barbourville, left this world to meet her Savior face to face on Saturday morning, July 28, 2007. She was a daughter of the late Jeff and Esceline Bargo Hammons born on May 15, 1931 at Dewitt. Mrs. Mitchell was a former elementary schoolteacher and enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting. She attended the Roadside Baptist Church. On September 6, 1953, she united in marriage with Maurice T. Mitchell in Tazewell, TN and to this union one son was born. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice, on May 15, 2005 and a brother, Obie John Hammons. Survivors include her son, Daniel Maurice Mitchell and wife and special caregiver, Billie, of Barbourville; three sisters, Opal Slusher of Buford, GA, Irma Hubbs and Neva Kaplan and husband, Milton, all of Barbourville; her long awaited granddaughter, Amanda Beth Mitchell; 13 nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn her passing. Her funeral service was conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, July 31 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Herman Hudson, Rev. Rick Partin and Rev. Ray Dean officiating. Mrs. Mitchell was laid to rest in the Mitchell Family Cemetery. Casket bearers were William Duff, Rev. Ray Dean, Andrew Blakely, Willie Hudson, James Campbell, Calvin Eagle, Larry Eagle and Gene Morris. Honorary bearers were her very special friends, Ruth Patterson, Pauline Hammons, Fredia Smith and Sheila Abner as well as her other friends and neighbors. Expressions of sympathy may go to the Arthritis Foundation in loving memory of Mrs. Mitchell. Arrangements were under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
