NANCY CARTER LAY of Cumberland Avenue, Barbourville, died Wednesday, September 15, 1999 in the Knox County Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Milton Russell Carter and Alice Browning Carter, born to them at Harlan County, Kentucky. She was a graduate of Union College. Mrs. Lay�s first career was a second grade school teacher at the age of 15, having taught in Harlan County and Knox County. She later became a state farm insurance agent, she was one of the first female agents nation wide. She was a state farm agent for 45 years in Barbourville before retiring. Mrs. Lay was a very active member of the Dr. Thomas Walker Chapter Daughters of The American Revolution and held the office of National Defense Chairperson and was the corresponding secretary. She united in marriage to a fellow educator, Jesse D. Lay who was superintendent of the Knox County School System for 30 years. Her husband, Jesse preceded her in death on October 12, 1987. Funeral services for Nancy Carter Lay were conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday, September 18, 1999 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Charles Douglas officiating. Interment followed in the Barbourville Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Lay have requested that contributions may be made to the Nancy and Jesse D. Lay Scholarship Fund at Union College or to the Barbourville First United Methodist Church in loving memory of Nancy Carter Lay. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
