Mr. Lewis A. Hopper, 94, of Hazard, formerly of Barbourville, passed away Monday evening, August 13, 2007 at his home. He was a son of the late Walter C. Hopper Sr. and Mariam Faulkner Hopper born on October 11, 1912 in Barbourville. Mr. Hopper was a longtime Hazard businessman and attorney A graduate of what is now Morehead State University, he was the Hazard Office Manager for Bituminous Casualty Insurance Company. Before moving to Hazard, Mr. Hopper practiced with the law firm of Sampson and Sampson in Harlan. Along with his law practice in Hazard, he served as vice president and general manager of Columbus Mining Company. As the owner of the Hazard Supply Company, Mr. Hopper continued in the coal business for many years. He served as a director as well as chairman of Hazard�s First Federal Savings and Loan. He was a life member of the Kentucky Bar Association and a founding member and longtime chairman of Hazard Community College. He also served as chairman of the Regional Advisory Council for Vocational Education. Named Perry County Man of the Year in 1968, Mr. Hopper has served his church, Hazard's First Presbyterian as deacon and elder. With all his interests in Perry County, Mr. Hopper also found the time to serve as vice president of Inland Fruit Company in Leesburg, FL. On September 26, 1937, he united in marriage with Elizabeth "Elizo" Barbieux in Hazard and to this union two children were born. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Winston Hopper and Harry G. Hopper Sr. and a sister, Jean Hopper Keeton. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Elizo" Hopper of Hazard; two children, Vera Faye Hopper of Hazard and Winston Hopper and wife, Peggy, of London; a brother, Walter C. Hopper Jr. and wife, Jody, of Barbourville; a sister-in-law, Bitty Hopper of Barbourville; his grandchildren, Renee Deason and her children, Joshua Deason and Makenzie Hinrichs of Birmingham, AL, Robin Howard and husband, Kenny, and their daughter, Karli, of Cropwell, AL and Peggy Steele and husband, Fitz, and their children, Abby, Presley and Cassi of Hazard; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his passing. His funeral service was conducted in the chapel of the Maggard Bros. Funeral Home-Main St. Friday, August 17 at 10 A.M. with Rev. Mike Cox officiating. A graveside service followed in the Barbourville Cemetery Friday at 4 P.M. with Rev. Joel Allen officiating. Casket bearers were Lewis B. Hopper, Walter C. Hopper III, David Hopper, Kenny Howard, Joshua Deason and Fitz Steele. Honorary bearers were Carl Causey, Carla Seals, Tony Whitaker, Mayor Bill Gorman, Joe Goodlette, Roy Pullium, Fred Skaggs, Steve Barker and Walt Ecton. Expressions of sympathy may go to the Lewis and Elizabeth Hopper Scholarship Fund at Hazard Community and Technical College. Arrangements were under the direction of the Knox Funeral
