Charles Valentine HANSEL Charles Valentine Hansel was a teacher, a reader, a philosopher and theologian, an arts enthusiast, but most of all he was a loving and beloved husband, father and grandfather. Charles died in the arms of his wife, Larnie Hansel on Thursday, August 3, at the Twin Towers Retirement Community in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lifelong Kentuckians, the couple had recently moved from Somerset to be closer to their children. Charles was born on May 21, 1931, in Pine Hill, Ky., in Rockcastle County. He grew up on Crummy's Creek in Harlan County, and in Mt. Vernon. His original passion was basketball and he aspired to be a sports announcer. As a teen, he set his desire aside to pursue a profession as minister and teacher. He met the love of his life, Larnie Lewis from Leslie County, while attending Southland Bible Institute in Pike County. Charles earned a BA and MA from Eastern Kentucky University where he was introduced to the study of philosophy his mentor, Kerney Adams. He also attended Duke Theologial Institute and completed coursework in philosophy at the University of Kentucky. He taught at EKU, Fleming-Neon High School, Union College and Lees Junior College. His final position was Dean of Students at Somerset Community College, where he developed a philosophy program. Charles passed on his love of reading and arts to his children, Renee Register, of Columbus, Ohio, who is a librarian, Pauletta Hansel, a poet and teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio and John Charles of Lexington, Ky., whose avocation is the guitar. He also touched the lives of thousands of students, including Harlan Wilson, of Georgetown, Ky., who recalls his first assignment on his first day of college was to write a paper proving the existence of God. Charles' Wife Larnie remembers, "People loved to be around Charles. All of our homes were filled with students and other teachers. He enjoyed lecturing, discussing and entertaining." In addition to his wife and children, Charles is survived by his adored granddaughter, Marea Stamper and her fiance, D.J. McComas, both of Louisville; his daughter-in-law, Judy Hansel; his sons-in-law, Roger Register and Owen Cramer, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Linda Madden Holtzclaw of Lexington, who gave much love and care during his final illnesses, and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Madden. The family wishes to express gratitude to Charles' doctors, Stephen Kiteck, MD, of Somerset and Charles Gurley, MD, of Lexington. A celebration of Charles Hansel's life was held on Sunday, August 6 at 2 p.m. at the Tucker, Yocum and Wilson Funeral Home, 320 West Main Street, Georgetown, Ky 502-863-1212.
