When was Johnson County Kentucky created?
On 24 February 1843, the Kentucky Assembly enacted a bill creating Johnson County from Floyd, Lawrence and Morgan Counties, effective 1 April 1843. The first court was held in June 1844. At that court session, John Howse was County Clerk, Daniel Hagar was sheriff, with his deputy being William J. Hagar.
Did Johnson County Kentucky collect any marriage, birth or death records prior to the statewide collection process which began in 1911?
The Vital Records of Johnson County, as with other Kentucky counties, were supposed to have been recorded after the Sutton Law passed in 1852. So beginning in 1853 all physicians, surgeons and mid-wives, clergymen or others persons performing marriages were to deposit with the County Clerk by the 10th of January each year, all the births, deaths and marriages they were involved with. The Sutton Law was repealed in 1862, due to the Civil War and that all but stopped the collection of these records . until 1910 (Except marriage records, which were continued, although not always complete as the Sutton law demanded)
Those of us doing Johnson County research are lucky, as some birth and death records were collected between 1862-1910. There are some births for the following years after 1862; 1874, 1875, 1876, 1878, 1902, 1903, 1904. Deaths after 1862; 1874, 1875, 1876, 1877, 1878, 1902,1903, 1904, 1910. With the notation here that these records are quite often a year off, (a 1903 birth might be recorded as 1904), there are no other birth or death records existing on the county or state level. The exception to this fact is that those individuals born before 1911 may have met the requirements for drawing social security and had a delayed birth certificate created. These are usually obtained in the same manner as any other birth certificate, as they are on file in Frankfort with the births after 1910.
