3,500 Estimated Enrolled In County Schools
75 Units Now Open 5 Others August 12
113 Teachers Employed

Submitted by   Walter Preston

An Estimated 3,500 Johnson County Children enrolled in the 75 one and two-room schools which opened last Wednesday, it was stated this week by Verne P. Horne county school superintendent.

The other five units of the county system, two consolidated graded schools and three consolidate high schools, will open Aug. 12, said Mr. Horne, with at least 1,000 students expected at the five schools.

During the first week of school in 1945, there were 3,200 students enrolled in the 75 schools, said Mr. Horne, and a total of 4,344 in all 80 units during the first week.

In announcing the names of the teachers for Johnson County for the ensuing year, the superintendent stated that113 were already on the job and that an additional 26 would begin their duties Aug. 12 in the five other schools.

Johnson County schools this year join other school systems in the state in operating on an eight-month term, making schools here operate through February. The five schools to open Aug. 12 will operate through May, said Mr. Horne.

The new eight-month term was made possible, the superintendent said, through an increase of three and one-half million dollars to the school fund by the 1946 General Assembly. It will mean an increase of 7 to 10 per cent per month, per teacher, in Johnson County , Mr. Horne stated. “No teacher will receive less than $800 for the school year and the average income will be approximately $1,000,” he added
