Looking for NANNIE (NANCY) CLARA WATSON or her father DR. AJ WATSON. Nannie obtained a Teachers Certificate from Hickman County, KY, in 1879, Examiners were W.W. EVANS and L.N. WELLS. By 1880, Nannie was living and teaching in Alamo, TN, Crockett County, where she shows up in the federal census. Her father was Dr. AJ Watson, and she was supposedly born in 1862 in Paducahm KY, which is McCracken County. Surnames: GAY EZELL GRISWELL JACKSON GILBERT
Submitter: Nancy A. ([email protected])
Date: 06 Nov 2001
By 1860 John Lundsford Gay appeared on the Hickman Co. Census with his wife, Mary (Ezell) and children. John married Martha Mayo 1st in TN in 1844 and had one son, William R, b. 1845 in Weakley Co., TN. He then married Mary, dau. of Fielder and Elizabeth Doss Ezell by 1848/49 and they had Eudora & Joan E. both born in TN and Benjamin, b. 1859 in Hickman Co., KY. (at least that is the way I believe it happened) Fielder Ezell was in Weakley Co. TN by 1850 , but did he die in Weakley Co or in Hickman Co. . Several of his children are in Hickman Co. by the early 1850s - Adaline who married Nathan R. Jackson and Thomas E. who married F. Phoebe Jackson in 1855 in Hickman Co. Supposedly Susan J. Ezell m. Thomas H. Foster in Hickman Co. in 1855 and probably Rebecca Jane m. William J. Foster. By 1877, Thomas E. Ezell became guardian of William Hosea Joel Griswell and John C. Griswell. Then he moved out of state (to Lake Co., TN in 1880 Census) and John Lundsford Gay became their guardian in 1879. (This was to claim back minors pension from the Civil War.) In 1880 William married Joan E. Gay and had three children. (Confused? here is some more) In 1870 P. Gilbert (Proctor Bush) and wife "Margaret" A. were living in Obion Co. with two children - in 1880 they are in Hickman Co. with 7 children. M. A. was actually Anne Maranda Griswell, sister to the two Griswell boys whose mother died in 1871 in Weakley Co. Yet neither P. B or Anne try for Guardianship that I can find. (and they are back in Obion Co. by the 1890 Special Census) Now to more confusion - in 1886, John Lundsford Gay died in Fulton Co and is buried at Rock Springs Cemetery. His wife, May died 1874 in Hickman Co, and is also buried in Rock Springs. By this time, it seems William Griswell had died, but we can't find any death date or grave. Joan is left to raise three children and moves back to Obion Co. Also, William R. Gay dies in 1878 in TN?, but he and his wife Louisia C. are shown on the 1870 Hickman Co. Census with two children, Joseph B and William. I have not been able to find John Lundsford Gay or William Griswell in any 1880 Census - either Kentucky or Tennessee. I realize after visiting both Hickman and Obion Counties that they lie so close to each other - but I can't get a handle on what was really transpiring - Can anyone help me sort out what is going on? And would love to share what I have about these families and meet other descendants.

We do not know if he was a medical doctor, or a professor, or even a clergyman. DuToy Roper is buried in Tiptonville, TN. in the oldest cemetery there. Did Hickman send many soldiers to the Civil War. If so was the leaning toward the Confederacy or the Union?

Does anyone know of a Cherokee village being near Columbus? I read a book recently [The Mississippi River by Tom Weil, copyright 1992] and it said, "At a sharp curve on Highway 123 south of Columbus, a whimsical sign announces Hailwell Elev. 312 ft. The weary, peeling farmhouse and adjacent grey wood building, both unwell, seem not to conform to the name. The same holds true for Oakton, where houses tumble into ruins at the nearly abandoned hamlet, established at the edge of a Cherokee village." I was just curious because my family (George H. and Emma L. McGee and children) lived in that area for many years and I had never heard of any Indians being there. Thanks!

Stephen HOSEY and and Mary's brother Andrew Jackson HENSHAW were listed one after the other in the 1872 tax lists. Stephen was gone by 1873, and Andrew by 1874. In 1880 Andrew and family were in Mississippi County, MO, but my William was not in the household. If anyone has any suggestions, I would much appreciate it. I've got another mystery photo that I'm trying to identify the people in. This photo was in the same batch that I posted about yesterday. I just now realized that Moscow, KY, is also in Hickman Co. This photo identifies the photographer (obviously a professional) as C. D. Pirtle of "Union City Tenn and Moscow Ky". Note that I'm also posting this in Obion Co, TN. The photo, which appears to be from the late 1800's, shows a family of four: father, mother, and two young boys. You can see it at http://people.ne.mediaone.net/tullis/genealogy/CDPirtlePhoto1.jpg . I recently purchased a batch of old photos, two of which are identified as having been taken by a "J. P. Brooks" in Clinton, KY. Unfortunately, these photos have no further identification. I'm trying to identify who these people might be, and I'm hoping someone might be able to recognize them. My guess is that they were taken in the late 1800's. One photo is a portrait of a young man with a beard, and can be seen at http://people.ne.mediaone.net/tullis/genealogy/ClintonMan1.jpg. The other photo is of a an older couple and can be seen at http://people.ne.mediaone.net/tullis/genealogy/ClintonCouple1.jpg. I think it's possible that the man in the second photo could be the same man as in the first one, just quite a few years later. My main interest in this is that many of my own ancestors were from Hickman Co, including Samuels, Mahan, Bullock, and Stanley. Please let me hear from you if you have any ideas about who these people might be. Thanks!

I am researching my g-g-grandfather, James A. Lawson Sr. He was supposedly a cook on a steamboat named "Gold Dust". The story is that the the boat blew up near Hickman and James died in the accident. The date was August 7, 1882.Does anyone have any information on a boat accident around that time.

Searching for information on William Houston Montgomery. He was born about 1859; my grandmother believes he was possibly born in Hickman Co. KY. He had 2 brothers; "Buck" (possibly J.A. Montgomery) and Jim. He had 2 sisters; Lou and "Sis" ( her name was probably Mary based on marriage and census info (TN), and the info by word of mouth). I'm stuck in my ancestral search on William. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Ken Needham [email protected]
