Commonwealth of Kentucky vs Jeremiah Buckley

Hickman County & Circuit set:

The Grand Jurors duly empanelled sworn and charged to enquire for said Commonwealth and the body of the county aforesaid at the April Term of the Hickman Circuit Court in the year 1839, upon their oaths present that Jeremiah Buckley last of said county yeoman, on the first day of April in the year 1839 at the county & circuit aforesaid suffer and permit the unlawful games of guker, poker and seven up to be played on a table with cards in a certain house in the town of Moscow in the county and circuit aforesaid, of which said house be the said Jeremiah Buckley was then and there the tenant at which said unlawful game of guker poker and seven up so played as aforesaid at the county and circuit aforesaid, money was then and there lost against the form of the Statue in that case made and provided & against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Information given by Diloway Toper and Balis Nevil not of the grand jury, farmers being in Hickman County

The Clerk of the Hickman Circuit Court with ? the cabias? assigned on this Indictment that both is required in the sum of six hundred dollars. WP Fowler

 

We of the Jury find the within defendant guilty in manner and form as is charged in the within indictment and do hereby reason then of assess his fine to the Commonwealth at two hundred dollars

We of the Jury find the within named Jeremiah Buckley guilty as charged in the within Indictment and do asses his fine to the Commonwealth by reason to two hundred and fifty dollars.

To the Sheriff of Hickman County: --Greeting.

We command you to take Jeremiah Buckley if he be found in your bailiwick, and him safely keep, so that you have him before the Judge of our Hickman Circuit Court, at the Courthouse in Clinton on the first day of our next April term, to answer an Indictment of the Grand Jury found against him at the April Term, 1839 suffering unlawful gamin in his house and have then there this writ.

Witness Wm H.H. Taylor, Clerk of our said Court, at the Court house aforesaid, the 19th day of December 1839, and in the 48 year of the Commonwealth. WHH Taylor

The Sheriff on the Execution of this writ will permit the said Buckley to give bail in the sum of six hundred dollars.
