I would like to check the possibility that some Grant Co Melton/Hensley
families might have links back to Albemarle Co VA.
My earliest proven ancestor was Elisha Melton died about 1830 in
Kanawha Co (W)VA. He married Elizabeth Hensley. I don't know where
either was born, but other contemporary Meltons/Hensleys in Kanawha Co
were born in Albemarle Co VA.

My grandfather, William Thomas Conner (married Ida Mae Hodges)
His father was James T. Conner (married to Martha Jane Underhill)
His father was John G. Conner (married to Sarah Gravet)
John G. Conner was born in 1819, Sarah around 1833 they married 11/24/1846
her step-father was Richard McAtee. she was 13 years old. they married in
Grant County KY.
we are trying to find John G. Conner's ancestry. We have suspicion that he
might be the son of John Conner, brother to William Conner of Conner
Prarie IN...however, we can't prove it. there were some marriages to
Delaware Indians...can't find that information online, and am in Texas,
but in any regard, we'd like to know when this branch of the conner family
came to America. We know, from family oral history, that this branch of
the family was from Doneraile, IR, and was catholic. If we can find the
ancestor, we can get records in IR for that side!
The reason for our suspicions is the "family legend" scenario. My sister
and I and our aunts and uncles remember stories that the "Conner brothers
came to KY via Canada, thru great lakes and into Indiana as fur trappers
and traders...stopping along the way to settle .. then being
uprooted...and travelled further with the Hodges (whom they met in their
journey) to settle in what became Boone County, KY..at Rabbit Hash on the
Ohio River.
We are looking for any connection. We know that a John Conner and a
Wilson Conner owned property in KY in Fayette county in 1801. Wilson
Conner is a family name, my grandfather's only brother (born in 1884) was
named Wilson Conner. we have asked a genealogist in KY to get information
regarding these people and she doesn't seem to see a connection.
Thank you

I am looking for information on my g g grandfather, Dr. Samuel
D. Poor. Although he lived in Washington,Co., he
practiced medicine in Garrard Co. in Bryantsville.
I don't know where he was born or who his parents were. There
were other Drs. in Garrard Co. with the same last name. I feel
that they may be related, but I have not found the relationship
as yet. Dr. Samuel appeared in Garrard Co. about 1850 and
remained in the area until 1860.
He married Elizabeth Miller of Washington Co. about 1853.
She was the daughter of Henry Miller. They lived in Washington
Co. near or in Mackville and Willsburg until about 1860. They
then moved to Grant Co. near Crittenden. My g g grandfather was
then Ciruit Clerk of Courts and then appointed notary by Govenor
Blackwell.
He had numerous chldren, John Wesley and Hiram, by a slave Ann,
Cora, Cassie, Rebecca, Jennie, Jerry and Henry by his wife
Elizabeth. I can find no record of his death, although he was
alive in 1886.
He was born somewhere about 1831. Any information would be

she could not handle the responsibility of the children alone.Possible
she could not feed them.My mom is 65 now and in poor health. It would mean a lot to all of us to solve this mystery and learn who Orie

circa 1876. She married JOEL STAMPER circa 1889 and they had two
children: EMMA and JOHN. They later divorced and Mary married FRANK
UNDERWOOD in 1901 at Nicholasville, KY. I think Mary and Frank may have
lived near Dry Ridge, KY. I do not know when she died but I believe she
died in the Dry Ridge area. Any information on MARY UNDERWOOD would be

Researching Sylvanus Butler who lived on Arnold's Creek in 1860 with 10 Children. Sylvanus was married to Margaret Fletcher and originally came from Bath County. Sylvanus fathered at least one more child in Grant County, my Great Grandfather Thomas Nicholas Butler around 1866. He is not known to have died in Grant County. Family legend holds that Sylvanus came from Missouri and died on the way to Grant County. That is not true but no one seems to know what happened to Sylvanus. Families that may have information about him besides the BUTLERs, include the ABERNATHY's. Sylvanus's oldest daughter, Mary married A.C. Abernathy in 1865 in Grant County.

I am researching my father's family, long time residents of Grant, Pendleton, Campbell, and Kenton Counties. First of course in BENSON, Forest B. Benson, Zachary Benson, Reuben Benson, and finally Zachariah Benson. Next is NORTON, Jennie Norton, George Hanan Norton, Archibald Norton, John Norton, and David Norton. In the maternal Norton line, there is HUTCHISON and RANSOM lines: Elizabeth M. Hutchison, James Hutchison, Catharine Ransom, and Catharine's mother, Peggy. In the rest of the NORTON line: NICHOLS, MITTS, VANDERBILT: Nancy M. Nichols, Simon Nichols and his wife Margaret Mitts, Benjamin Nichols and his wife, Comfort Vanderbilt, and finally John Nichols and his wife Margaretha. In the BENSON line, MCCOLLUM, RENNECKER (RENNECKAR, RINEKER, RENAKER), LEMMON, JUETT, FAULCONER, CRAIG, HAWKINS, LONG and others: Reuben Benson's wife was Winney McCollum, his son Zachary Benson was married to Catharine Rennecker (a widow of Loyd Bennett); George Rennecker, her father and Frances Juett her mother. In the
Renneckar line, George Renneckar, son of Adam Renneckar Sr. (son of Paul Rineker and Margaret) and Elizabeth Lemmon (daughter of Jacob Lemmon Sr.). George Renneckar's wife is Frances Juett, daughter of William Juett and Anna Faulconer. William Juett is the son of John Jouett and Mourning Harris (John is the son of Mathew Jouett and Susannah Moore). Anna Faulconer is the daughter of John Faulconer and Joyce (Rejoice) Craig. John is the son of Nicholas Faulconer and Sybilla ____. The Faulconer line continues back through David Faulconer to Thomas Faulconer. Joyce Craig is the daughter of the famous Tolliver Craig and his wife, Mary Hawkins (defenders of Bryan Station during the Revolutionary War. Tolliver is the son of John Craig and Jane Taliaferro (this last family is questioned in some circles). Mary Hawkins is the daughter of John Hawkins and Mary Long. John Hawkins is the son of another John Hawkins and Mary Dewe. The Hawkins line extends back another five generations to the Plymouth England
area. The Hawkins were prominant in Plymouth history, several holding knighthoods, mayor of Plymouth, and being sailors (several were captains of ships, and one was one of the first to captain a ship through the straits at the southern tip of South America. I would appreciate corrections in names, linages, families, as well as completion of gaps in these families. Dates, places, stories, occupations, children, religious affiliation, military service, anything about this lineage.

SHEPHERD FAMILY - Several of Philip B. SHEPHERD's children were baptized in Grant Co., KY. Can anyone shed any more light on these families? A SHEPHERD FAMILY FROM MARYLAND TO KENTUCKY, INDIANA, ILLINOIS, AND ALL POINTS WESTWARD
Siblings:
I. JOHN B. SHEPHERD b. 1777 MD
II. JOSEPH SHEPHERD
III. WILLIAM SHEPHERD
IV. LUCRETIA SHEPHERD m. James G. Jones
Joseph, John B. and William Shepherd were all listed on the same page (1510 in the 1820 Grayson Co. KY census, William disappears in 1830). It is known that John B. and Joseph are brothers and that William and Lucretia are probably also siblings based upon family naming patterns and settlement sites of the younger Shepherd members.
I. JOHN B. SHEPHERD b. 8 July 1777 in MD (location unknown but possibly Charles Co. MD as three of his children married three Neale siblings who came from Charles Co.) . The Shepherd family was among the early Catholic settlers who settled in Grayson Co., KY, in 1820. In 1840 they moved to neighboring Meade Co., KY where John B. Shepherd died and is buried at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Flaherty. In 1850 Elizabeth, his wife, moved with most of her younger children to St. Marie, IL Jasper Co., where she lived until her death in 1859. John B. Shepherd married Elizabeth Miles about 1800 probably in St. Mary's Co., MD, since her obit states that as her birthplace. Their children:

III. WILLIAM SHEPHERD Listed on the 1820 census of Grayson Co, KY, but disappears in 1830. In 1820 he is listed as having seven children.
IV. LUCRETIA SHEPHERD m. James G. Jones 30 Sep 1815 (license issued) Perry Co., IN m. 1 Oct. 1815 by Jas. McDaniel, Judge, Perry Co., IN Their marriage is also listed in the St. Augestine Catholic Church in Leopold, IN.
A child and a grandchild of John B. Shepherd's appeared in Leopold Twsp, Perry Co. The first was the marriage of Joseph Shepherd to Catharine Stephens 13 May 1832 by Chas. Coomes, a Catholic priest and apparently close friend of the family since he officiated at many of their events.
The second incident was the grandson of John B. Shepherd's to be baptized in Perry Co., IN. In St. Augestine's parish we also find the 10 Apr 1851 baptism of James Monroe Shepherd s/o John Miles and Rose Ann King. Also the 1861 Perry Co., IN atlas lists J. H. Shepherd owning 80 acres in the SW corner of the county (Leopold Twsp) and another 80 acres joining Leopold Twsp with Union Twsp and ab. 2 mi. South of the St. Augestine's Catholic Church. J. Jones owns 80 acres in Tobin Twsp.
James G. Jones was Indiana's first Attorney General although the office was not funded in the 1816 Constitution. It was in 1821 that the legislature established or funded the office for a period of three years and an annual salary of $200. James G. Jones's signature as AG can be found on approximately twelve documents.
"Warrick Co - 1885" by Goodspeed,
pg.. 7 "One of the ablest lawyers of the Indiana bar was James G. Jones who succeeded Judge Panett 1869-1871. Resident of Evansville. Vanderburgh Co., IN, but lived early life in Newburg. Attorney General for the State."
pg. 53 lists James G. Jones Coroner 1814.
Pg. 86 "James G. Jones was a member of the secret society of the Newburg Lodge #104, I.O.O.F. and a charter member of Wolsey Encampment Jan. 18, 1854."

Searching for TAYLORS in Grant and Owen Counties; my great-great grandfather was Thomas T. TAYLOR, born 1821, married Susan Thompson (1822-1911?); his son was John Andrew TAYLOR, 1855 (?)-1912, married Emma M. Gilbert. They may have lived in Corinth, Keefer, or Owenton. Especially want to know about TAYLOR CEMETERY which was once located "on a side road, off the road that leads from U.S. 25 to Keefer" (according to Kentucky Cemetery Records, Vol. 2, published by DAR). Planning a trip to area later in 1998; does anyone know if this cemetery still exists, or was it uprooted by highways or construction, or what? Along which road? John's tombstone is in Highland Cemetery in Florence, but other ancestors are supposedly in old cemetery. Thanks! [email protected]

Looking for descendants of Sylvanus (aka Silvanus ) Butler and Margaret Ann Fletcher Butler. Sylvanus and Margaret Ann married in Bath County, KY. They came to Grant County in 1850-1851. Their son Nathan was born in Grant county in 1852. Sylvanus lived on Arnold's Creek until about 1866-1869. They left and may have attempted to settle in Missouri or Arkansas. Margaret Ann and her sons Nathan, Sylvanus Wayne, Grandison, and Thomas Nicholas(my great grandfather)returned to Grant County by 1882. She may have had a daughter Margaret who married a Penick. Margaret Ann's oldest daughter Lydia married a Rozzell and after being widowed married John Hendrix. Her next daughter Mary married A. C. Abernathy. I have no idea who Catherine or Carn (maybe Carrie) married. William Odd did not go with the family West. He remained and married a Hendrix and then Alice ?Unknown. They are buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery along with his Mother, Grandison and Sylvanus Wayne. Would like to know if anyone knows where Sylvanus is buried? Any information on Margaret Ann's death? Happy to exchange have knowlege of Sylvanus' father and grandfather.
