In 1777 Fincastle, County,Virginia's General Assembly divided Fincastle County into three parts and created Washington, Montgomery and Kentucky counties. The act creating these three counties described Kentucky County as being "to the south and westward of a line beginning on the Ohio River at the Great Sandy creek." The first settlements in Kentucky Co. were Harrodsburg, Boonesborro and Bryan Station. Settlers arrived in Kentucky through the Cumberland Gap and Wilderness Road.

In 1780, Kentucky Co. was divided into 3 counties; Lincoln Co., Jefferson Co., and Fayette Co. Fayette included most of the area east and north of the Kentucky River. Woodford Co. was created in 1788 from Fayette Co. In 1792, Kentucky became a state and the Grant Co. area became Scott Co. and was divided to become Campbell Co.Pendleton Co. was formed from Campbell Co. and later became current day Grant Co. in 1820. Between 1776 and 1820, the land now known as Grant Co. was a part of seven different counties.

Grant County is located in the Outer Bluegrass Region of the state. It is located between Cincinnati, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky. Our neighbors are Pendleton Co., Harrison Co., Scott Co., Boone Co., Owen Co., Kenton Co., Bracken Co. and Gallatin Co. Its principal cities are Williamstown, the county seat, Corinth, Dry Ridge, and Crittenden.
