Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. JOHN S. WITHROW, born in Blair County, Penn., December 15, 1821, is the eldest son of Thomas and Sarah (Brookbank) Withrow. Thomas was born in Miffin County, Penn., of Scotch descent, came to Kentucky in 1833, and settled in Middletown, Jefferson County. He removed to and died in Hancock County, Ky., in 1850. Mrs. Sarah Withrow was born in Hagerstown, Md., was of German descent, and died in 1879. John S. Withrow came to Kentucky with his parents. In 1845 he went into the dry goods trade in Frankfort, with Jacob Swiger, continuing until 1850, and then moved to Woodford. He married, July 5, 1849, Miss Catherine, daughter of James and Christiana (Chrisman) McKee, natives of Woodford County. She died in 1880, five children being the result of their union, viz.: James, Lillie, William, Mary and John. Lillie married Prof. J. C. Hughes, who fills the chair of surgery in the medical college of Keokuk, Iowa. He second wife is Mrs. C. M. Moore, daughter of J. A. and Julia (Clark) Collins, of Grant County. Mr. Withrow resides on the old Wallace farm, and is the owner of 800 acres of land in Midway Precinct, Woodford Co.
