Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. W. A. SMITH, of Woodford County, Ky., was born in Montgomery County, Ky., November 14, 1834, and is the eldest and only living son of William and Charlotte (Goodloe) Smith. In September, 1863, he married Miss Mary E. Lyne, daughter of William and Margaret J. Lyne. To this marriage one child was born, William Lyne Smith. The Doctor's great-grandfather was Col. James Smith, a Virginian, and one of the first settlers of Kentucky; he fought through the Indian war, and wrote a history of it. The Doctor's maternal grandfather, Dr. George Goodloe, was also a Virginian; he moved from Culpeper County, Va., located in Fayette County, Ky., and was an eminent physician. The Doctor's great- grandfather, Goodloe, was a Baptist minister, and lived and died in Virginia.
