Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. C. A. REED was born March 25, 1841, and is the fifth son of John P. and Nancy H. (Hawkins) Reed. The former was a native of Virginia, a hatter by trade, at which he worked in Jessamine and Boyle Counties, Ky., chiefly, but was also engaged to a liberal extent in farming. He died in Woodford County, of which county his wife was a native. He was of Scotch-Irish descent, and his wife was a native of Jessamine County, Ky., of English extraction. C. A. Reed was born in Woodford County, Ky. He was educated in the common schools, and at the age of sixteen he went to Lexington and learned the saddler's trade, at which he worked until 1859, when he went into the grocery business at Salt Spring, Mercer County. He followed it until July, 1862, when he entered Company H, Basil Duke's Kentucky Cavalry, under Morgan's command, and served until May 5, 1865. He married, January 12, 1869, Sallie B., daughter of Col. J. W. and Sallie (Elgin) Hawkins, of Mercer County. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Reed seven children were born, of whom four are living: Lena A., Thomas H., John J. and William H. Mrs. Sallie B. Reed died February 11, 1883. She was a member of the Christian Church of which Mr. Reed and his daughter, Lena A., are also members. Mr. Reed is an Odd Fellow, and is the owner of 500 acres of land in Woodford County.
