HAMPTON was born June 5, 1826, and is the only surviving son of Andrew and Mary (Hayden) Hampton, all natives of Jessamine County, Ky. Andrew Hampton was a first cousin of Senator Wade Hampton, of North Carolina; was born in 1796; was a hemp manufacturer, and died in 1854. Samuel T. Hampton in 1844 began the manufacture of hemp with his father, Andrew, and in 1849 removed to Woodford County, where he continued in business until the breaking out of the civil war. His brother, Willis, had also been a member of the firm, but was drowned in 1849. Samuel T. Hampton was married, April 29, 1851, to Miss Belle Dixon, a native of Jessamine County, and a daughter of Jesse and Hester (Cleveland) Dixon, and to this union have been born four children, as follows: Wade, Maggie J. H., Mary N. and Bettie D. Mr. Hampton is proprietor of 300 acres of good land in one tract and ninety acres in another.
