Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. JAMES R. GAY, a native of Woodford County, Ky., was born January 19, 1828, and is the second son of James and Catherine (Claggett) Gay. His father, James Gay, was born in the fort which was erected on the site now occupied by the city of Lexington. His grandfather, John Gay, was a native of Scotland and, together with Dunlaps and Stevensons, was among the first settlers of Woodford County. They all purchased land near the present site of Pisgah Church, and as soon as it was possible to live outside the fort at Lexington, and as soon as Indian depredations ceased to embrace them, they settled together in the neighborhood where their descendants now live. James R. Gay now lives on the homestead purchased by his grandfather in 1782, and which has ever since remained in the family. After his grandfather left Scotland he first settled in Virginia and removed thence to Lexington, Ky., in 1779, lived within the protection of the fort three years, and occupied the Woodford farm in 1782, which was then part of Virginia. John Gay, the grandfather, was born in 1740, and was married to Sarah Loughridge, who was born in Scotland in 1754. The fifth son, James, was born November 1, 1781, as was said, in the fort at Lexington, and he was married March 4, 1817, to Catherine Claggett, whose parents were natives of Lexington and Hagerstown, Md. His father lived all his life on the homestead, and died in 1840. The mother survived her husband a quarter of a century, dying in 1867. Five children survive their parents, viz: Margaret (Wason), John T., James R., Catherine and Rebecca (Wentworth). James R. was reared on the farm and educated at the Pisgah school. He was married, January 14, 1852, to Miss Kate E. Lamme, of Fayette County, Ky. They have eight children: James L., Maggie, Wason, William, Mary L., Horace, Carrie and Katie. The family were all members of the Presbyterian Church at Pisgah, which was founded a century ago by the Gays, Stevensons and Dunlaps. Mr. Gay's farm contains 600 acres of as choice and sightly land as can be found in the State.
