Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. A. J. ALEXANDER was born October 7, 1824, son of Robert and Eliza R. (Weisiger) Alexander, natives of near Edinburgh, Scotland and Frankfort, Ky. Robert Alexander was born in 1767, was educated at the University of Edinburgh; came to Virginia from Scotland in 1786, and from Virginia to Woodford County, Ky., about 1790 or 1791, and purchased the Woodburn estate from Gen. Hugh Mercer's heirs, to whom it was granted by the State of Virginia for military services during the Revolutionary war. He was married to Miss Weisiger, of Frankfort, in 1814, who was a daughter of Daniel Weisiger, a Virginian and an early settler in Frankfort. To this union were born five children: William (who died an infant), Robert Aitcheson, Mrs. Waller (of Chicago), A. J., and a sister (now residing in London). Robert Alexander, Sr., was an amanuensis of Dr. Franklin for a time, he died in February, 1841. A. J. Alexander's grandfather, William, came to America shortly after the Revolutionary war; lived at Staunton, Va., and moved to Kentucky in 1811, lived on the farm of his son Robert, now owned by A. J., and died in his nintieth year in 1819. He was a son of William Alexander, who was a banker, also provost of Edinburgh, Scotland, and represented that city in the British Parliament. A. J. Alexander was reared on the farm, receiving a common school education, and later went to the school of B. B. Sayre in Frankfort. In October, 1841, he went to England and studied with a private tutor from some time, and afterward attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and returned to Kentucky in May, 1848, going back to England in the fall of the same year and has since been back once. He was married in May, 1851, to Miss Lucy Humphreys, daughter of David Humphreys, deceased, of Woodford; she died in 1858; three children were born to them, but all died. In 1871 he married Miss Lucy Fullerton, of Chillicothe, Ohio. To them have been born seven children: Robert Aitcheson, Elizabeth, Alexander John Aitcheson, Lucy F., Humphrey F., Claude Aitcheson and Joseph Scott. Robert A. and Elizabeth died young. He inherited the Woodburn farm from his brother Robert, who was born in 1819, and died in 1867. He makes a specialty of Short-horn cattle and fine horses. King Alfonzo, Falsetto, and Powhatan are among his thoroughbreds. He also owns Belmont, the sire of Nutwood, who sold for $22,000 this year, also sire of Wedgewood, who sold for $25,000; Harold, the sire, and Miss Russell the dam, of Maud S.; he bred and sold Maud S. when one year old for about $200 or $300; he now owns Lord Russell, a brother, and two or three sisters of Maud S. and others. He owns 3,000 acres of land in Woodford, and is a member of the Presbyterian Church at Versailles.
