Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Wolfe County Green Berry Swango was born in Wolfe County, Ky. His parents were Stephen and Caroline (Trimble) Swango, natives of Kentucky. Green Berry Swango was brought up on the farm, which occupation he has followed the greater part of his life. He was the third in a family of eleven children, and was educated in the common schools. In 1861 he enlisted in the Confederate army, Company J, Fifth Kentucky Infantry, in which he served one year, and then entered the Tenth Kentucky Cavalry, Company E, where he served until the close of the war. He then returned to Hazel Green, Wolfe County, Ky., where he has since been engaged in mercantile pursuits; he also carries on farming, and is one of the most substantial men of Wolfe County. In 1877 he was elected door-keeper in the House of Representatives at Frankfort, during that session; in 1882 he was elected county judge of Wolfe County, and was re-elected in 1886. August 26, 1869, he married Eliza J. Young, a daughter of Hugh Young, of Virginia. She bore him three sons, viz: James H., Charles S. and John Marion.
