Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Whitley County John R. Sampson, a native of Glasgow, Ky., was born April 26, 1852. His father, Judge William Sampson, an eminent lawyer, and a native of Virginia, married Virginia Gilpin also of Virginia. They were the parents of five children, viz: Ida L., Margaret, John R., William and Virginia. John R. Sampson was reared in his native town. In 1866 he moved to Louisville, where he attended school and in 1872 graduated in law from the University of Louisville. He then practiced his profession in Louisville, until 1876, when he moved to Columbia, Ky., and practiced there until 1884. He then located in Willamsburg, Whitley County, Ky., where he has since been actively engaged in the practice of the legal profession. April 21, 1880, he married Bettie Cravens, a daughter of Col Timoleon and Mary (Wagoner) Cravens, of Adair County, Ky. To this union have been born three sons, viz: William, John E. and Reed J. Mr. Sampson is a Royal Arch Mason, a member of the F. & A.M., and in politics he affiliates with the Democrats. He is a member of the Baptist Church, while his wife is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
