Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Whitley County Madison A. Moore, proprietor of the Williamsburg Hotel, was born in Whitley County, Ky., July 12, 1847. His father, Luke Moore, was born in Virginia, September 22, 1816; he married Obedience Mahan, a native of Knox County, Ky., and they were the parents of eleven children, viz: James E., Granville L., John, Rebecca, Madison A., Luke, William M., Julia, Gilson D., Samuel B. and Obedience. Madison A. Moore was reared on a farm and received his education in his native county. In 1863 he enlisted in Company F, Thirty-second Kentucky Infantry, served his term of enlistment, and subsequently enlisted in Company G, Forty-ninth Kentucky Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He then returned home and engaged in the mercantile business, which he followed until 1869, when he moved to Williamsburg and continued in business until 1871. He had previously been appointed deputy revenue collector, in which capacity he served until 1870, and was also deputy sheriff under W.C. Rose. In 1870 he was appointed Postmaster of Williamsburg, which office he held until 1872, when he resigned. He was elected school commissioner in 1870, and re-elected in 1872. He carried on the drug business from 1873 to 1876, and in that year engaged in the hotel business, which he still follows, and has been engaged as a United States mail contractor in the various States and territories since 1876. He has also been deputy county clerk of Whitley County for several years. December 19, 1869, he married Julie Davis, a daughter of William B. and Olive (Ellison) Davis. They have nine children, viz: George C., Flora M., Mattie A., Addie, John D., Oscar, B.H., Leonard F. and Jesse L. Mr. Moore is a member of the F. & A.M., and in politics is a Republican.
