Whitley County

James H. Davis was born in Whitley County, Ky., August 15, 1847.  His
father, William B., was born in the same county, and was a son of John
Davis, a native of North Carolina, both of whom were farmers.  William B.
Davis was married April 9, 1843, to Miss Olive P. Ellison, a daughter of
William Ellison, of Whitley County.  She bore him nine children, viz: James
H., William C., Julia A., Nancy A., Amanda J., Garrett M., Leeanna, Sidney
B. and Ed.  James H. Davis was brought up on the farm, and in early life
attended the common schools.  In 1867 he entered the Agricultural and
Mechanical College at Lexington, Ky., which he attended two years.  He then
commenced the study of medicine with Dr. J.W. Turner, of Lancaster, Ky., but
never completed his medical course, and only practiced a short time.  In
1874 he was elected county clerk of Whitley County, and has been re-elected
once in four years ever since, except from 1878 to 1882, when he was not a
candidate, being the present incumbent of that office.  He has also a farm
in Whitley County, which he devotes to general farming.  September 18, 1873,
he married Martha F. Perkins, a daughter of Rev. Solomon and Annie
(Creekman) Perkins, of Whitley County.  They are the parents of five
children, viz: Fred L., Sam G., Robert H., William S. and Green C.  Mr.
Davis is a deacon in the Baptist Church, of which his wife is also a member.
He is a member of the F. & A.M. fraternity, and a stanch Republican.
