Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, Whitley County Jerry D. Adkins, Postmaster of Williamsburgh, Whitley County, Ky., was born in Whitley County, July 3, 1861. His father Lewis Adkins, also a native of Whitley County, was born in 1827. The latter was engaged in mercantile pursuits the greater part of his life, and also followed agricultural employments; he married Pollie A. McCarty, a native of Whitley County, who was born in 1825. They had eleven children, seven daughters and four sons, viz: Mary, J. Morgan, Lee A., Green A., Nannie, Olive, Jerry D., Nellie, Sarah, Ruth and Susie, twins. Jerry D. Adkins was brought up in his native county, where he received the most of his education. He worked on the farm until about eighteen years of age, at which time he began to teach school, and in 1885 graduated from Bryant & Stratton's Business College at Louisville. He then began the study of law with R.D. Hill of Williamsburgh. He was soon after commissioned Postmaster of Williamsburgh, and gave up the legal profession. In politics he is a Democrat, and in religion he affiliates with the Baptists. He is a member of the F. & A.M. fraternity.
