Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. JUNIUS WOOTEN, M. D., a leading physician of Smith's Grove, was born November 30, 1845, in Tompkinsville, Monroe Co., Ky., and is a son of Sylvanus B. and Harriet N. (Hodgen) Wooten, who had born to them five children: Junius, Mary E., Sylvanus H., Thomas V., Hattie R. Sylvanus B., the father, was born and reared in the north east part of Barren County. He engaged in mercantile business at Tompkinsville, Franklin and Smith's Grove, and from 1856 to 1866 also followed farming. He died in February, 1872, aged fifty-six years. He was a son of Joseph Wooten, who was born and reared in Virginia; he was bound to a Mr. Bagbey [Bagby], who brought him to Barren County about 1800. He became an extensive farmer and owned some 3,000 or 4,000 acres of land, and was also a large slave holder. He was of German descent and married Sallie Wilson, a native of Virginia. The mother of our subject was born and reared in Green County, Ky., and was a daughter of Isaac Hodgen, a distinguished Baptist minister, who also conducted a farm and was a slave holder. He married Miss Phoebe Trabue, who was born and reared in Virginia and Kentucky. When Junius was one year old his parents moved to Simpson County; when he was but five they moved to Smith's Grove, where he received a fair English education, but quit school at sixteen on account of the breaking out of the war; at twenty he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. Duncan, of Franklin, and graduated from the University of Louisville in March, 1868; he practiced his profession in Simpson County until the spring of 1871, when he located and continued his practice with marked success in Smith's Grove, and in 1871 opened a drug store, which he still carries on. He is also chairman of the board of trustees of the town of Smith's Grove. The Doctor was united in marriage, October 17, 1872, to Edmonia Shobe, of Warrern County, Ky., a daughter of Absolom and Jane (Dunn) Shobe, who were both born and reared in Warren County. Dr. Wooten and wife had born to bless their union three children: Ella Mary, S. B. and Junius H. They are both devoted and leading members of the Christian Church, and he is a member of the K. of H. In politics he is a Democrat and cast his first vote for Horatio Seymour.
