WILLIAMS, son of James and Anna (Adams) Williams, was born near Fairfax Court House, Va., February 15, 1818. He is the ninth of a family of seven sons and four daughters, all of whom lived to be grown except one boy. James Williams was born and reared in Fairfax County, Va.; was an extensive farmer and slave holder, and in 1835 immigrated to Shelby County, Ky., where he resided with his children until his death. He was of Scotch descent; his wife was a daughter of John Adams, who was born and reared in Fairfax County; he was of English descent; a farmer and slave owner, and served as an officer in the struggle for independence. George P. Williams was reared on a farm, and at the age of fifteen left home and began the carpenter's trade in Washington City, D. C., where he lived for six years. In the spring of 1837 he went to Louisville, Ky., where he was engaged for a number of years as architect and builder. At the beginning of the war he was quite successful in speculating in horses. In 1863 he located on a farm of 250 acres on Big Bend, two miles north of Bowling Green. Then land is most Barren River bottoms, and is highly cultivated; his residence is located on a hill, commanding a few of the surrounding country for miles. In February, 1842, Mr. Williams married Isabella Medd, of Henderson, Ky., a native of Franklin County, Ind., who bore him seven children, five of whom were reared: Charles M., Arabella Byce, now Mrs. James D. Bemiss; James M., Penelope (Doughtey), and George P., Jr. Mrs. Williams' parents, Stephen and Mary Anna (Wynn) Medd emigrated from Durham County, England, in 1818, to America, and settled in Franklin County, Ind., where Mrs. Medd died. Later Mr. Medd moved to Louisville; thence to Henderson, Ky., and thence to New Orleans, where he died in 1858, aged fifty-seven years. His latter years were spent in the mercantile and produce business. His second wife was a Mrs. McDada. Mr. and Mrs. Williams and children are members of the Baptist Church, of Bowling Green; he is a member of the I. O. O. F. In politics he is a Democrat, but cast his first presidential vote for Gen.
