"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 410-411. Used by permission. [Warren] GEORGE HAYNES RIGGS, JR.: This young pastor was born in Calhoun, McLean County, Kentucky, on September 9, 1918, and is the son of George H. Sr. and Oma Riggs. He is a graduate of the Calhoun graded and high school and is at present a student in Western Kentucky State Teachers College at Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was converted at the age of fourteen and was baptized into the fellowship of the Calhoun Baptist Church by Rev. A. R. Moore. His call to the ministry came at the age of twenty-two and this same Church immediately licensed him to preach. He was called to the care of the Island Baptist Church in April, 1940, and this same Church requested the Calhoun Church to ordain him to the work of the Gospel ministry. This was done on May 9, 1940, with Revs. O. L. Weir, I. L. Baughn, W. H. Rone, W. S. Coakley, D. Arthur Dailey, W. W. Harvey, F. L. Walker, C. R. Hill, and deacons from sister Churches forming the ordaining council. The service was very impressive and at the close of the ordination our young brother baptized about thirty persons into the fellowship of the Island Church. These had been led to the Lord as a result of a recent revival in that Church when the pastor was assisted by Rev. C. R. Hill of the Calhoun Church. Besides serving the Island Church since April, 1940, our brother served the Basin Church for eight months in 1940, and since January, 1941, he has been pastor of the Church at Morgantown, Butler County, Kentucky. He has these two half-time Churches at present. Brother Riggs was married to Miss Edna Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Townes Hill, Calhoun, Kentucky, on December 7, 1937. The ceremony was performed at the Utica Baptist Church by Rev. George C. Lovan, who was the young man's pastor for some time. They have no children. This young man is one of the most promising pastors in our Association. He has a great native ability and is a pleasant and forceful speaker. Wherever he has served the people have become his fast friends. We predict great things for him in the future work of the Lord.
