ALEXANDER McELWAIN, of Warren County (deceased), was born in Ireland in
1797, and was a son of Samson and Frances (McElwain) McElwain. They
immigrated to the United States and settled in Kentucky.  Subject was
married, in 1840, to Martha Morehead. They have three children:  Harriet
R., Alexander Alzira, and a son who lives with and supports his mother.
Mr. McElwain was a farmer, highly respected.  Politically he was a
Democrat, and during the late war was a Unionist, but favored peace in
preference to partisan strife.  He was a member of the Baptist Church,
and his wife is a member of the same organization.
