JENKINS, mayor of the city of Bowling Green, and wholesale and retail grocer, was born in Warren County, Ky.; August 21, 1835, is a son of John E. and Polly Ann (Ewing) Jenkins, and is of English extraction. His father was born in Virginia in 1803. His paternal grandfather, Simon Jenkins, was also a Virginian. The Ewing family immigrated to this State from Virginia. Both of these families were among the early settlers of Warrren County, and underwent the hardships and privations incident to life in the new country. Henry E. Jenkins was reared on the farm and educated at the country schools of that day. At nineteen years of age he began life for himself by farming, and this occupation he continued until 1871; then removed to Bowling Green, where he has since resided. In 1872 he engaged in the grocery business, in partnership with L. A. Hawks. Aftr some time Mr. Jenkins purchased his partner's interest, and the firm is now known as H. E. Jenkins & Co., and is doing one of the most extensive trades in the grocery line in the city. Mr. Jenkins is one of the practical men of this part of Kentucky. He is a Democrat. In 1873 he was elected a member of the Bowling Green City Council, which position he held for five years; was then elected a member of the county court, and served four years; was then re-elected to the city council. In 1884 he was elected mayor of Bowling Green. The marriage of Mr. Jenkins took place in 1857, with Catherine Jones, who died in 1866. The following year Mr. Jenkins married Caroline Alexander, a native of this county. They have one child, viz.: Ella P. In 1857 Mr. Jenkins was made a member of the I. O. O. F. and a Mason in 1861. He and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and for seven years he has been an elder in that denomination. Mr. Jenkins is one of the most enterprising, and public-spirited citizens of Bowling Green. He was an advocate of the Bowling Green Graded Schools, and is a man of true merit and worth.
