Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886 Warren County JOHN EDWELL was born near Stockholm, Sweden, in 1835, and is a son of William and Martha Edwell, who were also natives of Sweden, and lived and died in that country. John Edwell was reared on the farm, and educated at the schools of his native country. Coming to America in 1858 he settled in Bowling Green, Ky., and for three years worked at the carpenter's trade. In 1862 he began the grocery business in this city, which he has since continued. He is the oldest grocer in Bowling Green; is doing a successful business, and is a shrewd and careful trader. Politically he affiliates with the Democratic party. In 1879 he was elected councilman, and has been twice re-elected to that position. He is also one of the water commissioners. His marriage took place in 1868, with Martha Dodd, a native of Warren County, and a daughter of William Dodd. They have one child-J. Henry. Mr. and Mrs. Edwell are members of the Baptist Church.
