Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. WILLIAM DAVENPORT, son of F. P. and Martha (More) Davenport; ws born December 15, 1836, on the farm where he now resides, five miles below Bowling Green; and is the ninth in a family of six sons and four daughters. F. P. Davenport was born in Virginia, of English descent, immigrated in 1813 to Jessamine County, Ky., where he married his wife, who was born and reared in Mat [sic] County. In an early day he moved and settled on 280 acres, within a mile of where his son William now resides. He died in September, 1855, aged seventy-two years. The parents of Mrs. Martha Davenport were S. G. and ___ (Penick) More. Her father came from Virginia about 1790, and settled in Jessamine County; he was an extensive farmer and slave-holder; owned a farm of 800 acres; and died about 1820, aged about eighty years; he was of English descent. WIlliam Davenport was reared on a farm, and has followed agricultural pursuits all his life, except one winter spent in steamboating on the Barren River. In December, 1859, he married Georgia A. Benton, of Warren County, a native of White County, Ill. She is a daughter of James W. and Rebecca (Code) Benton, natives, respectively, of Tennessee and Illinois, and of English origin. To Mr. and Mrs. Davenport eight children were born: Charles G., James F., Louella, Margaret, Edward W., Clarence J., Frank T. and Ethel. After his marriage Mr. Davenport lived with his father three years; then located on 1,555 acres, where he now resides; now owns 1,785 acres on Barren River, 800 of which are under cultivation and well improved; he pays considerable attention to stock raising. He was a member of the Grange during its existence in this county; in politics he is a Democrat and cast his first presidential vote for S. A. Douglas. He and wife are members of the Baptist Church.
