Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. JOSEPH C. CULLINS was born March 22, 1837, in Meriwether County, Ga. When but six months old he was brought by his parents to Pontotoc County, Miss., where he lived until 1862. After the war he located in Warren County, Ky., where he now resides. He was a member of Company F, of the Thirty-first Mississippi Infantry, with which he served during the entire war. He was present at the siege of Vicksburg, the battles of Shiloh, Holly Springs, Coffeeville, Granada, Jackson and Baton Rouge, besides a large number of minor battles and skirmishes. His father, Richard Cullins, was born in 1800, near Richmond, in the State of Virginia, but removed in an early day to South Carolina; later to Georgia, and in 1837 to Mississippi. His father was a native of Virginia, and of English descent. Richard Cullins married, about 1822, Betsy, daughter of William Norris. From this union sprang William, Sarah (Cornelius), Malinda (Heard), Eliza (McCall), Martha (Williamson); Nancy (Collins), Edwin (deceased), Georgia (deceased) and Orlena (deceased. Joseph C. has been twice married; his first wife, whom he married January 2, 1866, was Jennie, daughter of Henry and Eliza (Ray) Smith, of Warren County. To them were born Georgia, Henry and Joseph C. His second marriage took place April 14, 1878, with Mrs. Mary (Shobe) Jones, daughter of Absalom and Jane (Dunn) Shobe. To them have been born Sarah and Elizabeth (deceased). Mr. Cullins started in life without any assistance, and with no capital but his own hands and brain, and has become the owner of 200 acres of tillable land in a fine state of cultivation. He is a farmer and a large stock trader, having spent ten consecutive winters in Atlanta, Ga., in the latter business. He is a member of the Baptist, and his wife of the Christian Church. Politically he was formerly an old line Whig, but is now a Democrat.
