Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County. GEORGE C. COOKSEY, judge of Warren County, is a native of this county, and was born January 26, 1835. He is a son of William Walter and Rebecca (Lewis) Cooksey, and is of English descent. His father was born in Greenville County, Va., in 1801, and came to Kentucky when a young man with his parents, and settled in this county, where his father died in 1837. The paternal grandfather of Judge Cooksey was Walter Cooksey, also a Virginian. His maternal grandfather also came to this county, and died here prior to 1835. The Cooksey family has been known in this county and connected with its affairs for at least one hundred years. Judge Cooksey was reared on the farm and received his eduation at the schools of this county. In 1853 he came to Bowling Green and engaged in the printing business, in what was then known as the Gazette office. He read law under C. M. Briggs, and in 1856 was licensed to practice, and this continued until 1862. He then enlisted in the Confederate Army, under Gen. John H. Morgan, in Company K, Second Kentucky Cavalry, commanded by Basil W. Duke. In 1864 he was made a prisoner of war, and was held as such for nine months, at Rock Island, Ill. In 1865 he resumed the practice of law in Bowling Green. He was elected county attorney for Warren County in 1866, and was re-elected in 1870 and 1874. In 1878 he was elected county judge, and re-elected in 1882. For many years he has been one of the public men of this county; has always fulfilled the trust imposed in him with honor and dignity, and there is not a more generous and kind hearted man to be found in the county. His friends are as numerous as his acquaintance is wide. His marriage occurred in 1867, with Corilla M. Smith, by whom he had four children, viz.: Euclid C., Maggie A., Frank E. and Paul. Mrs. Cooksey died in 1880, and two years later Judge Cooksey was united in marriage with Eva M. Hill, a native of this county. He is an earnest supporter of the Democratic party and a man of no mean worth. Cooksey Lewis Morgan Duke Smith Hill = Greenville-VA IL http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/warren/cooksey.gc.txt
