HUGH BARCLAY was born November 10, 1827, near Bowling Green, and is the second of the four sons of Eli and Ann L. (Clark) Barclay. He was reared on the farm, and in 1850 went via Panama to California, where he remained three years, engaged in mining, returning by way of Central America. Since his return he has been actively engaged in farming. He leased the Louisville & Nashville pike from Bowling Green to the county line on the north, and owns an interest in other pikes; he is the owner also of 360 acres two miles east of Bowling Green, lying on both banks of the river, improved with good buildings, etc.; also owns 160 acres in Neosho County, Kas., and 180 in Florida, where he spends his winters with his family. His father, Eli Barclay, was a son of Hugh Barclay, who was born and reared in Rockingham County, Va.; immigrated to Warren County, Ky., in an early day, and settled on 1,000 acres on the south bank of Barren River; he was engaged in wagoning in an early day between Bowling Green and Louisville; and died about 1834, aged eighty-two years. His parents came from Ireland. Eli Barclay came with his parents to Warren County in 1807; became an extensive slave owner; was in the war of 1812, and fought in the battle in which Tecumseh fell. He died in 1848, aged sixty-two years; his wife was a daughter of David Clark, of Bullock County. Mr. Clark was for many years county and circuit clerk. His parents came from England. Mr. Barclay (subject) married, in May, 1854, Elizabeth R., daughter of Nathan and Mary (Hill) Hill, Warren County, and to their union six children were born; Nathan P., Mollie A. (deceased), Maggie (deceased), Joseph Eli, Jennie H. and Sallie E. Mr. and Mrs. Barclay are members of the Baptist Church; he is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Scott. Mrs. Barclay's parents were natives of South Carolina, and immigrated to Kentucky about 1824; her father was a son of Joseph Hill; owned a large farm east of Bowling Green, and a large number of negroes; he died about 1873, aged seventy-seven.
