MITCHELL was born in Charleston, Clarke County, Ind., July 7, 1814. His parents, Giles and Mary (Moore) Mitchell, were natives of Virignia and Kentucky respectively, and were married in 1807 in Kentucky. Three years later they came to Indiana, and settled in Charleston, where there was but a fort and one block-house. He followed his trade as brick-layer until 1820, when he came to Bartholomew County and remained until 1833, removing thence to Martinsville, where he built the first court house, thus continuing at his trade until his death, which occurred July 5, 1865. The mother died August 3, 1828. Samuel M. Mitchell is the third son and fourth child in a family of six children. He was reared in Clarke County until six years of age; then removed to Bartholomew County, where he remained for twelve years. He then came to Martinsville, and entered the employ of his brother, a dealer in general merchandise. He remained with him one year, then went to Salem, Ind., where he attended school for one year. Thence he went to Madison, Ind., and afterward was appointed second clerk of the "Livingston," a steamboat between Cincinnatti and New Orleans. He returned in one year, and going to Martinsville became partner of his brother in the general merchandise store, and continued in that until 1867. He then sold his interest and formed a partnership with his son William in the same business, and is at present so engaged, enjoying a lucrative business. In June, 1867, he opened a private loan and desposit bank in Martinsville, which is still flourishing. In 1840 he was married to Jane M. Dietz, daughter of David Dietz, a citizen of Columbus, Ind. By this union there were two children - William, and Mariah J. (deceased). His wife died in January, 1846, and in December, 1849, he married Mrs. Annie Eslinger, a daughter of Jeremiah Sandy, a citizen of Gosport. By this union there were eight children, six of whom are living - Catharine, Dr. Giles S. (now of Cincinnati), Mary E., Robert B. (at present Cashier of Mitchell's Bank), India and Anna. Mr. Mitchell and wife are members of the Christian Church, and he is Republican.
