Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. JOHN W. LEE county clerk of Trimble County, was born in Knox County, Mo., August 13, 1843, and is the second son of William and Phebe J. (Clem) Lee, natives of Carroll and Trimble Counties, Ky. He has resided in Trimble County since two years of age, was educated in the common schools, and in May, 1864, enlisted in the Southern Army. He served under Gens. Giltner and Cosby, and had his left arm shot off at Marion, Va., December 17, 1864. On his return to Bedford he taught school until 1870, when he was elected county clerk of Trimble County, and re-elected four times, the fifth election having taken place in August, 1886. April 27, 1871, he married Miss Sarah E. Gillis, daughter of W. B. Gillis of Trimble County, and four children born to the marriage are named William J., Robert M., John G. and Tandy P.
