Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. LEONARD HARLEY, an old and wealthy farmer of Trimble County, was born in Culpeper County, Va., March 10, 1798, the fifth of eight children born to Daniel and Nancy (Riley) Harley, also of Virginia. They moved to Kentucky about 1805, and first settled in Boyle County, where they remained until 1820. They then located in what is now Trimble County, and later moved to Washington County, Ky., where the father died. Leonard was only seven years of age when he came to Kentucky. He adopted farming as his vocation, started in life a poor boy, has followed agriculture and distilling all his life. He settled where he now resided in 1823, has upward of 300 acres of land, and is worth about $50,000 or $75,000, all of which he has made by his own efforts. In 1816 he married Martha Harrington, of North Carolina, and eight children blessed their union: Nancy A., Mary, William, Rachel, Elizabeth, America, Martha E. and an infant (deceased); Martha E. and Rachel are also deceased. The family are members of the Baptist Church. Politically Mr. Harley is a Democrat. He had two brothers who fought in the war of 1812.
