Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. STEPHEN R. CALLIS, deputy sheriff of Trimble County, was born there November 22, 1864. His parents, Warren M. and Sarah (Smith) Callis, are also natives of Trimble County, his grandfathers, William O. Callis and Daniel Smith, having come from Virginia with their parents, the former settling five miles south of Bedford and the latter in the northern part of the county. From 1881 to 1884 Warren M. Callis served as sheriff, and Stephen R. Callis went in as deputy in his father's first year in office. Stephen R. was educated at Jeffersonville High School, and afterward learned telegraphy. September 1, 1886, he married Miss Carrie M. Voiers, daughter of B. H. Voiers, of Trimble County. Mr. Callis is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
