Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. ANTHONY W. BARTLETT, Government storekeeper at Milton, was born in New Castle about 1817, to Anthony and Nancy (Blackburn) Bartlett. The former was born in Virginia, moved to Woodford County, Ky., at a very early date, where he resided a few years, and afterward moved to New Castle, in Henry County, where he was one of the first settlers. He was very popular socially and politically, and participated in the early wars of the country. He was a member of the Legislature from Henry County for several years, and later in the State Senate. His wife was one of the well known Kentucky family of Blackburns. Our subject is the sixth of eight children; was reared in New Castle, where he received his education. When young he turned his attention to the study of medicine with Dr. Lewis Owen, and attended the medical school at Lexington. After finishing his course he moved to Mississippi and located at Tallahatchie County and there practiced until the outbreak of the Mexican war, when he returned to Kentucky, raised a company and joined the Fourth Kentucky under Capt. John S. Williams, served as captain and now the only surviving officer of that rank of his regiment. At the close of the war he returned to Kentucky and located at Bedford where he practiced his profession until 1852, at which time he moved back to Mississippi. There he remained until the outbreak of the civil war. He then raised the Fourth Mississippi Regiment State Infantry, and entered the Confederate service. In 1867 he returned to Bedford, Ky., and was elected county judge of Trimble County for four years, during which time he was appointed assistant physician at the Anchorage Asylum, and served in that capacity two years. He again returned to Bedford and practiced until 1880, when he was appointed medical superintendent of the Lexington Asylum by Gov. Blackburn, but remained there only about a year, when he returned to Bedford and practiced until 1886. He was then appointed store-keeper in the revenue department at Milton, Ky. In 1836 he married Mary Blanks, daughter of James and Edith Blanks, of Carroll County, Miss. Two daughters and four sons were born to this union: Katherine D., now the wife of Capt. J. W. McCain, attorney at law of Bedford, Ky.; Thomas J., practicing physician, Fredericksburg, Texas; Edward; James, attorney at law; John B. and Caroline. John B. and Edward are deceased. Mr. Bartlett is a member of the I.O.O.F. and F. & A. M. Politically he is a Democrat.
