Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Trimble Co. BENJAMIN H. D. ALLEN was born in Fauquier County, Va., August 8, 1824, the sixth of ten children born to Maj. Charles and Susan H. (Gibson) Allen. Maj. Charles C. Allen was born in Culpeper County, Va., and followed farming all his life. He was a major in the war of 1812, and died about 1836 in Virginia. His widow died in Arkansas in 1868. Our subject was reared on the farm in Virginia, and educated in the best schools of his native county. In 1846 he enlisted in the Mexican war under Capt. S. T. Mason, of Virginia, and served until the close of the war, when he received an honorable discharge. At the close of the war he came to Kentucky, located at LaGrange, and was employed a short time as clerk. About 1850 he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits in Oldham County, and two years later moved to Trimble County, purchased land and settled where he now resides. He owns about 166 acres five miles southeast of Bedford, on the Little Kentucky River. October 2, 1855, he married Mary E. Sibley, daughter of John and Katherine (Smith) Sibley. John Sibley was a son of Leonard and Judith (Booth) Sibley, natives of Virginia. Katherine Smith was a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Q. (Russell) Smith, natives of Virginia. Both the Sibleys and Smiths were among the first families to settled in Henry County, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. Allen are the parents of four daughters and three sons: John G., Lillie B., Benjamin T., Susie K., Lafayette J., Mary V. and Nora B. The last named died in infancy. The family are active members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Allen is a Master Mason. Politically he is a Democrat.
