History of Todd County, Kentucky, ed. J. H. Battle, 1884, F. A. Battey Publishing Co., 1884, Page 252. [Kirkmansville Precinct] CHARLES M. POWELL was born March 19, 1823, in Todd County. He is a son of Levi and Nancy (Brewer) Powell. The father was born in North Carolina; he died in 1856, aged seventy. The mother was born in Virginia; she died in 1854, aged seventy. In about 1818 the family came to this country, and settled at Blue Lick Fork; after a few years they moved to Kirkmansville Precinct, where the parents died. Charles M. then bought out the heirs and carried on this farm till [sic] January, 1872, when he came to his present locality. Mr. Powell began life without a dollar, and by perseverance, industry, and strict attention to business, he has acquired a competency. He has owned over a 1,000 acres of land, a portion of which he has given to his children; he now ownes [sic] where he resides 200 acres of land, also a grist and saw-mill, also 187 acres elsewhere in this precinct, and fifty-seven acres at the Blue Lick Fork. He was married in 1844 to Mary Shelton. She was born in this county. These parents have had nine children, seven of whom are living. They are life-long and devoted members of the Baptist Church.
