His father, Moses Black, immigrated five years prior to that date, however, and stopped at Pittsburgh, Penn., then in Springfield, Ky., and finally settled permanently in Bardstown, Nelson County, to which place he moved his family in 1821. Our subject, the second of five children, was reared in Bardstown, educated at St. Joseph's College and St. Mary's College, Marion County. He began life as a hatter, which he followed about ten years, and then engaged in merchandising about the same length of time in Taylorsville. He then moved to a farm, where he resided twenty years. In 1878 he was elected to the office of county judge, and served four years; was twice elected to the office of police judge, which he still fills. November 15, 1839, he married Julia Murphy of Taylorsville, daughter of William B. Murphy, who was a merchant of Irish ancestry. Mrs. Black died in 1848, the mother of four children: Charles B., William M., Joseph J. and Julia (Hough). December 12, 1850, Mr. Black married Mrs. Permilia McGee, widow of John McGee and daughter of Colman Wells, of Nelson County, a farmer and native of Virginia. Mr. Black has been a member since 1846 of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, of which his wife has been a member since 1864. To Mr. Black's second marriage ten children were born: David C., John W., Robert (deceased), Jennie A., James B., Benjamin T., Martha A. (Russell), Mark E.H. (deceased), George G. and Walter R.
