Kentucky: A History of the State. Perrin, Battle & Kniffin, 6th ed.,1887, Spencer Co. M.C. ALLOWAY was born in Nelson County, Ky., February 23, 1837, the second of a family of nine children born to Joel and Elizabeth (Grigsby) Alloway. Joel was born in Shelby County, Ky.; was a carpenter by trade but passed the latter part of his life in agricultural pursuits. He was a son of William, who was born in Maryland; immigrated to Kentucky when Louisville was a small town and was one of the first mechanics in the State. Mrs. Elizabeth Alloway was born in Nelson County, Ky.; was a daughter of Smith Grigsby, who was a native of Virginia. Our subject left Nelson County when four years of age and in company with his parents went to Bullitt County, where he remained three years; then went to Spencer County where he has since resided. He received a common-school education and has always been engaged in farming and stock trading. He was married June 7, 1866 to Isona Collins of Spencer County, Ky., daughter of Reuben and Mary (Johnson) Collins. Six children have blessed their union, four living: Altha A., Nannie B., Samuel C. and Virginia. Mr. Alloway was a soldier in the Confederate Army, First Kentucky, Company D, Jeff. Rodgers Captain and was out three years. He owns 420 acres of fine land and in politics is a Democrat. He is a Master Mason.
