SAMUEL McKNIGHT was born in Lawrence County, Indiana, April 25, 1824, being the second of eight children born to Christopher and Rebecca (Vontrece) McKnight. The father was a North Carolinian, and came to Indiana on the day of the battle of Tippecanoe, settling first on Lost River in Orange County, but going to Lawrence about the year 1814. The mother was a native of Shelby County, Kentucky. Samuel remained on his father's farm, securing in youth merely the rudiments of an education. October 26, 1846, he married Samantha P. Ikerd, and they are the parents of the following children: Robert E., who married Ellen Kinnick; Theophilus F., who wife was America Jones; Eliza J., who married Thomas Ragsdale; Mary E., who is the wife of P. H. Ikerd; James D., who married Nancy A. Younger, deceased; Rebecca A., unmarried; Harriet K., who is the wife of John Alexander; Samantha E., who married William Lanier; William E., Massie E., Susan E. and Sarah I., the last four unmarried. Mr. McKnight comes of an old and prominent family. He is a successful farmer, owning 280 acres of land. He deals to some extent in fine stock. He is a Democrat and his wife is a member of the Methodist Church.
