He is the second son of a family of four sons born to John and Mary A. (Tinsley) McCampbell. His father was a native of Virginia, born in 1808, and by occupation, in early life, was a surveyor. He came to Kentucky when a young man, and settled on a farm in Shelby County, where he lived until his death in 1841. His mother is a native of Shelby County, born in 1815. She is a member of the Baptist Church, and a firm supporter of its principles. His paternal grandfather, Robert McCampbell, was a native of Virginia, came to Kentucky at an early date, and settled in Shelby County, where he lived until his death about 1845. His maternal grandfather, Samuel Tinsley, was a native Virginia, came to Kentucky and settled in Shelby County when young, and was among the early pioneers. Our subject remained on the farm until 1860, when he engaged in merchandising at Harrisonville, in which he successfully continued until the outbreak of the civil war. He enlisted, November 7, 1861, in Company D, Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Col. Whitaker, and participated in the battles of Shiloh, Stone River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and several minor ones. He was commissioned second lieutenant of his company, May 4, 1862, in which capacity he served until October 19, 1863, when he was promoted to the rank of major, in which capacity he served until the expiration of his term. He fought gallantly in defense of his country, and was honorably discharged at Louisville January 4, 1865. He immediately returned home and engaged in farming where he now resides. He was united in marriage, September 14, 1865, to Sarah A. Tinsley, an estimable lady of Shelby County, and the birth of four sons and three daughters followed their union: Lucian S., born June 22, 1866, died September 25, 1869; Minnie B., born May 8, 1870, Mary H., July 17, 1872; William A., December 22, 1873; died July 20, 1875; John B., December 23, 1875, and Bain C., April 12, 1880.
