Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. RICHARD F. LOGAN, M.D., was born in Shelbyville, Ky., September 6, 1839, and is the eldest and only living son of John A. and Rebecca (Bristow) Logan, both natives of Shelby County. John Logan, the grandfather, was a native of Shelby County, and a son of Gen. Benj. Logan, the famous pioneer. John A. Logan, the father of Richard, lost his life in Cuba, in 1850, in the attempt to release that island from Spanish rule. In 1857, Richard F. Logan, went to Louisville and engaged in the study of medicine under Dr. Middleton Goldsmith, professor of surgery of the Kentucky School of Medicine. The same year he entered the college, from which he graduated in 1860. A few years later he received the ad eundem degree from the University of Louisville. In 1861 he became first surgeon of the Fifteenth Kentucky Federal Volunteers, and remained in the service eighteen months. He then returned to Louisville, received a commission as acting assistant surgeon, and was assigned to duty in the Jefferson Hospital, Jeffersonville, Ind., then under charge of Surgeon Goldsmith, his former preceptor. He remained in the Jefferson Hospital until the close of the war, and then, until 1869, practiced in Louisville, when he removed to Shelbyville, where he has since resided. March 16, 1864, the Doctor married Miss Lucy, daughter of James I. Lemon, of Louisville, and is now the father of three children: Effie, Libbie and Benjamin. The Doctor is a member of the State and county medical societies, is a Mason and Odd Fellow, a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and from 1880 to 1884 was examining surgeon for Shelbyville District of applicants for pensions. Dr. Logan's paternal grandmother was Miss Anna C. Anderson, daughter of Col. Richard Anderson, who served on the staff of Lafayette through the Revolutionary war. Her mother was a sister of Gen. George Rogers Clark. Maj. Robert Anderson, of Fort Sumter fame, and Charles Anderson, who was governor of Ohio, were also brothers of Ann C. Anderson, the Doctor's grandmother. The Doctor's grandfather, Bristow, came from the central part of Tennessee, and married a Miss Jackson, a distant relative of Andrew Jackson. Ben Bristow ex-Secretary of Unites States Treasury, is a relative of Dr. Logan's mother.
