HITE was born in Shelby County, Ky., January 9, 1853, and is the third son born to James C. and Jane E. (Ware) Hite. Mrs. Jane E. Hite is a native of Shelby County, and daughter of Charles Ware, deceased. James C. Hite is a Virginian, born in Franklin County, in 1811, and came to Shelby County, Ky., with his father, Joseph Hite, in 1813. For some years prior to the late war James C. was deputy sheriff; he died in 1878. His granduncle, Isaac Hite, came to Kentucky with Daniel Boone, and was a prominent character in the early days of the State. Charles S. Hite was reared on the home farm, graduated from the Forrest Military Academy in 1877, and in 1878 entered the law department of the University of Louisville, and graduated in 1879, but ill health prevented his engaging in active practice. In 1882 he was elected county surveyor and civil engineer, and on the expiration of his term of office, in 1886, was elected deputy sheriff under Winford Bailey, which position he still holds. November 1, 1881, he married Miss Kittie B., daughter of H. G. Cardwell, of Shelby County, and one daughter, Stella, has blessed this union. Mr. and Mrs. Hite are members of the Methodist Church.
