WILLIAM HARLEY, a native of Shelby County, Ky., was born January 12, 1823, the only son of five living children born to Leonard and Martha (Harrington) Harley, natives, respectively, of Virginia and North Carolina. His grandfather, Daniel Harley, was a native of Virginia, came to Kentucky in an early day and settled on a farm in Boyle County, where he died. Our subject has devoted his life to agricultural pursuits, and now has a farm of 202 acres, all in a good state of cultivation. He married, December 17, 1845, Frances Swift, a native of Oldham County, and a daughter of John and Eliza (Dawkins) Swift, natives, respectively, of Tennessee and Kentucky. Six sons and four daughters were born to their union: John L., William T. (deceased), Benjamin F., George W., James R., Joseph T. Martha E., Christiana, Ida A. and Luella F. Politically Mr. Harley is a Democrat. He and his wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
