Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. DR. FRANCIS M. HANKINS was born in Shelby County, Ky., January 4, 1832, the youngest of a family of six sons and three daughters born to Gilbert and Rebecca (Carriss) Hankins. Gilbert Hankins was a native of Virginia, a well-to-do farmer, moved to Kentucky in 1800, and settled on a farm near Harrisonville, where he lived a long and useful life, and was noted for his many acts of charity. He took an active part in the war of 1812, participated in the battle of New Orleans, and died February 6, 1847. His wife, Rebecca, was a native of Shelby County, born in 1793, was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and a firm supporter of its principles. Dr. Hankins' paternal grandfather was born in Ireland, came to America when a young man, located on a farm in Virginia, served in the war of the Revolution, and after several years moved to Kentucky and settled on a farm where died in 1845. Our subject lived with his father on the farm until his fourteenth year, when he entered a school in Shelby County where he received a good English education. In the spring of 1850 he began the study of medicine under Dr. J. B. Burk, an eminent physician of Harrisonville, with whom he remained for three years. In 1854 he attended the Kentucky School of Medicine at Louisville for one session and in 1855 began practice at Harrisonville. In August 1862, he enlisted in the service of his country, in the Ninth Kentucky Federal Cavalry, participated in the battle of Perryville and others of less importance. He served as hospital surgeon and steward until honorably discharged at Eminence, Ky., in September 1863. He immediately returned to Harrisonville and resumed the practice of his profession, which he has since continued, and is widely known as a successful physician and surgeon. He married, February 23, 1860, Louisa Hedden, a native of Anderson County, and an estimable lady. one son, Evart, and one daughter, Lillian, blessed their union. Dr. Hankins has been postmaster of Harrisonville for more than twenty years, and is the present incumbent. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, of the Missionary Baptist Church, and is an honored citizen of Shelby County. Politically he is an ardent advocate of the principles of the Republican party.
