Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. WILLIAM GRAVES was born in 1816, in Green County, Ky., and is a son of Frank and Drucilla (Cowherd) Graves. Frank Graves was the son of Isaac Graves, was born in Virginia in 1771, and was a carpenter by trade. About 1800 he came to Kentucky, purchased land, settled in Green County, and followed farming all his life. About 1805 he married Drucilla Cowherd, daughter of Maj. James and Nancy (Young) Cowherd, natives of Kentucky. To this union were born three daughters and six sons. William Graves was the sixth child born; was reared on the farm in Green County, and received only a common-school education. He devoted his attention to farming and milling in Green County until 1840, when he came to Shelby County, and settled where he now resides, and has a valuable farm of upward of 600 acres, all of which is well improved, with two residences and barns. In 1841 he married Margaret George, daughter of Linsey and Elizabeth (Young) George, natives of Kentucky. To this union were born four daughters and two sons. Mrs. Margaret Graves died in 1861, and in 1863 William Graves married Mary Lillard, daughter of Thomas Lillard of Anderson County, Ky. To this union was born one daughter, who died in infancy. The family are active members of the Christian Church, and Mr. Graves is a member of the F. & A. M. fraternity. Politically his is a Democrat.
