Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. LUDWELL R. FINCH (deceased) was for many years recognized as one of Shelby County's most prominent farmers and stock men, and from him Finchville State and postoffice got its names. He was born in Woodford County near Versailles in 1806, and was the third son of a family of five children born to William and Elizabeth Finch, natives of Virginia, but early settlers of Kentucky. He was born and reared on the farm, and devoted his whole attention to agriculture all his lifetime. In 1839 he settled in Shelby County, and in 1841 near Finchville. He owned 275 acres of as fine land as there is in Shelby County, all of which was well improved. He was regarded as a model farmer and as one of the most prosperous and industrious ones in Shelby County. November 6, 1837, he married George A. Lovell, of Spencer County, but natives of Virginia, and among the first families to settle in Spencer County. Mr. Finch was a member of the Baptist Church. He contributed liberally to church and charitable organizations, and was beloved by all who knew him. He died September 12, 1879. His widow still resides on the old home.
