Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. CALIEN CROSBY, a farmer and stock grower, residing three miles and a half north of Simpsonville, was born in Woodford County December 9, 1806. He is a son of John Crosby, who was born in Virginia in 1755, a son of George Crosby, also a native of Virginia. John Crosby was reared on the farm, and made agriculture his principal occupation. He married, about 1798, Nancy Peters, of Virginia, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Ashby) Peters, of Virginia. Mrs. Crosby was born in 1765, and to her and husband were born six children--three sons and three daughters: Gnoeth, John, Mary A., Calien, Nancy and Francis. In 1806 the family moved to Kentucky, and settled in Woodford County near Versailles, remaining there until 1811; then moved to Scott County, and in 1822 to Shelby County and settled near where our subject now resides. There the father purchased 107 acres of land and followed farming. In 1834 he moved to where our subject now resides, and purchased 339 acres of land, where he died, at the age of ninety-eight years, July 17, 1853. He was a soldier in the war of the Revolution. His wife died in July, 1851. Our subject was reared on the farm and received a common-school education. He remained with his father until the latter's death. He now owns the old homestead and 382 acres of land, all well improved. June 1, 1843, he married Eliza Mount, daughter of John and Liddie (Jennings) Mount, of Oldham County. To this union have been born two daughters and three sons: Mary F., Lydia A., John M., infant not named and Charles P. Our subject became a member of the Baptist Church in 1838 at Simpsonville, and is now about the oldest member of that church. He has for many years been a deacon in the church, and is regarded as one of the church's substantial members. His wife is also a member of the Baptist Church, and became a member at Simpsonville in 1843. Politically Mr. Crosby is a Democrat.
