Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. PHILEMON BIRD was born in Shelby County, Ky., August 31, 1841, a son of Philemon and Sallie (Hanna) Bird. His father was born in Scott County, Ky., in 1801, a son of Lee Bird, who was born in Virginia, and came to Kentucky in 1790, and settled in Scott County. Subject has been a farmer all his life, and makes a specialty of raising Shorthorn cattle. He married, January 13, 1870, Lizzie C. McMurtry, of Lexington, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Clark) McMurtry. The children, born to this union, are Bettie C., Sallie H., Annie B., George Lee and Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Bird, Bettie C. and Sallie H. are members of the Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the State grange. He owns 190 acres of land. As a citizen Mr. Bird is quite popular, and enjoys the confidence of all who know him. In January, 1884, he received the appointment (at the hand of Hon. J. Proctor Knot, governor of the State of Kentucky), as trustee of the Kentucky State Agricultural and Mechanical College for a term of six years, and is a member of the executive committee of that institution.
